E-waste Management

E-waste Management

Introduction: Electronic waste, or E-waste, is a term for electronic products/appliances such as mobile phones, televisions, computers, laptops, printers, fax machines or even their parts that have become unwanted, non-working or obsolete, and have essentially reached the end of their useful life. As per E-waste Management Rules 2016, “E-waste” has been defined as electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part discarded as waste by the consumer or bulk consumer as well as rejects from manufacturing, refurbishment and repair processes. E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 and subsequent amendment applies to every manufacturer, producer, consumer, bulk consumer, collection centres, dealers, e-retailer, refurbisher, dismantler and recycler involved in manufacture, sale, transfer, purchase, collection, storage and processing of in-scope e-waste or waste electrical and electronic equipment including their components, consumables, parts and spares. E-waste generally consists of those substances contained in the electronic product that can bring adverse effects to the atmosphere and hence managing it in a proper way is important. Apart from affecting the environment, it can also affect the health of the people.

Benefits of recycling of E-waste:

  • E-waste contains many valuable, recoverable materials such as aluminum, copper, gold, silver, plastics, and ferrous metals. In order to conserve natural resources and the energy needed to produce new electronic equipment from virgin resources, electronic equipment can be refurbished, reused, and recycled instead of being landfilled.
  • E-waste also contains toxic and hazardous materials including mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium, chromium, and chemical flame retardants, which have the potential to leach into our soil and water.
  • Protects your surroundings- Safe recycling of outdated electronics promotes sound management of toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury.
  • Conserves natural resources– Recycling recovers valuable materials from old electronics that can be used to make new products. As a result, we save energy, reduce pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and save resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.
  • Helps others – Donating your used electronics benefits your community by passing on ready-to-use or refurbished equipment to those who need it.
  • Saves landfill space – E-waste is a growing waste stream. By recycling these items, landfill space is conserved.

Consequences of Improper E-waste Handling and Recycling: Improper handling, accidental breakage damage and improper recycling of the end-of-life product impose harm to human health or the environment. Followings are negative consequences of disposal of the product if not done in a scientific way:

  1. Toxic materials and chemicals present in e-waste can cause severe environmental pollution and adversely affect the human body.
  2. Batteries contains highly hazardous element.
  3. Burning of rubber & Plastic in open areas releases toxic gases into the atmosphere, causing severe air pollution.
  4. Dumping of e-waste into landfills eventually make the hazardous and toxic components of e-waste seep into the eco-system including the regional water tables, causing soil pollution and contaminating the water table.

In order to promote and encourage electronic waste recycling, Acer has done tie-up with E-Waste Recyclers India, the government authorized e-waste recycler for facilitating our Channel partners/customers to enable them to dispose of e-waste products after its end-of-life products (when a product is non-operational or non-repairable) and also defective spare parts and also assist Acer in fulfilling E-waste /EPR Compliance.
